Apple Vision Pro: What This Means

Interesting Elements Of The Technology That Greatly Validates AR/MR/Immersive Technology And Also Vastly Change The Tech Status Quo

At a whopping $3,500 price tag, the Apple Vision Pro headset will be available in 2024. This first-generation technology from Apple greatly validates a market and industry that has been greatly hyped since the early 2010’s.

TLDR: I believe this technology will transform the way many people work (think productivity apps), consume and experience media (movies, books, music), and connect with friends and family. If you can’t be in the same place/room as others, this will be THE closest way to enjoy experiences together, like virtual movie theatres with friends, virtually hang out, or re-live meaningful memories – photos, videos in a more enhanced manor than ever before.

Similar to the iPhone release years ago, only Apple applications will be available on this headset. It will come with Head Band that provides great comfortability and a Fit Dial that will allow users to adjust the headband as needed. Incredibly the headset will feature custom micro-OLED displays equipped with more pixels than a 4K TV for each eye. I can’t wait to experience this first-hand myself! What I think will be a game-changer for experiencing media (movies, books, music, re-living memories through photos and videos) will be the Digital Crown feature that offers the ability to control the level of immersion while wearing the headset. I think this feature will be similar to surround-sound at movies or spatial audio in games today, that will make experiences through a headset much more life-like and realistic.

I personally am most looking forward to seeing how creators and developers marry immersive technology and music, so that the songs artists write become more…immersive! For instance, if I could listen to ‘The House That Built Me‘, performed by Maranda Lambert and virtually experience, inside and out, the house she’s telling the story about? Sign me up!

If you’re like me and you want to get your hands on a dev kit to start building your own apps on Apple’s new visionOS, you’ll have to wait as well. Looks like it will be available soon, but not yet, coming this July.

The biggest downside initially seems to be the battery life, which is said to be limited to about two hours and the battery pack will also be an extension of the headset rather than built in to the technology.
